Summary: In early September 2004, the world looked on in horror as a mass hostage-taking at a Russian school ended in bloody chaos. More than 300 people, about half of them young children, were killed. More than 700 others were injured. The hostage-takers were demanding that Russian troops withdraw from Chechnya. In this News in Review story we'll look at what happened and examine why the conflict in Chechnya continues to claim so many lives.
