Summary: In early September 2004, the world looked on in horror as a mass hostage-taking at a Russian school ended in bloody chaos. More than 300 people, about half of them young children, were killed. More than 700 others were injured. The hostage-takers were demanding that Russian troops withdraw from Chechnya.
