Florida teen Analee Echevarria has feared social interaction since her mom died three years ago. Now, she's dealing with even more personal hurdles: her best friend, Lily, has gone radio silent; she can't figure out how to express her feelings for Harris, her online role-playing quest partner; and worst of all, her Cuban father is about to marry a younger, Barbie-perfect yoga instructor. When partnered in biology class with insufferable heartthrob Seb Matias, who isn't over his latest breakup, Analee takes a chance on his wacky suggestion: become a fake couple to make his ex-girlfriend jealous. Heat and humidity levels rise, as do the stakes. Filled with self-doubt, Analee begins as a narrator with whom to sympathize; however, she blossoms into an endearing, more empowered storyteller. Genuine and humorous, the story carries the question "What could go wrong?" and while the answer may seem obvious, there are abundant surprises along the way. Give this to readers who enjoy stories about overcoming self-esteem and anxiety issues, or who just love a good tale about relationships. Grades 7-12. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.

With her mom's death, her dad's remarriage, and estrangement from her best friend, sixteen-year-old anxious introvert Analee prefers online role-playing games to living in the real world. An arrangement to fake-date a popular jock, though, sets her on a course of self-rediscovery. Milanes delivers a diverse cast of fully fleshed-out characters with nuanced relationships and relatable situations in this complex, rewarding rom-com. Copyright 2019 Horn Book Guide Reviews.

A genuinely fresh spin on Pygmalion in high school. Cuban-American Analee prefers to spend her time online, avoiding her feelings and absorbed in a role-playing game and chatting with a boy named Harris, whom she's never met in person (she lives in Florida and he is in Seattle). Her desire to stay away from the real world only gets greater when her father announces that he and his girlfriend of 11 months, a hippie named Harlow, are engaged. This is difficult for Analee to accept, in part because she is still grieving the death of her mother a few years earlier. As if that isn't enough, Analee is forced to become lab partners with Seb, a member of the popular crew at school that sees Analee as a loser—and that also includes her ex-best friend, Lily. As they get to know each other, Seb and Analee become not friends but fake boyfriend and girlfriend so that Seb can make his ex-girlfriend Chloe jealous. What follows is what you'd expect in any romantic comedy, all leading u p to every romantic comedy's classic point of climax—a wedding. The familiarity of the setup and plot doesn't mean the writing and characters aren't authentic and multilayered. The novel is funny and affecting, well-balanced, and simply fun. The supporting cast of characters is racially diverse. A romantic comedy that reminds readers why the genre has such lasting appeal. (Fiction. 14-18) Copyright Kirkus 2018 Kirkus/BPI Communications. Gr 9 Up—Analee is a 16-year-old girl from Florida, but she feels more comfortable being Kiri the Night Elf Hunter in her online role-playing game. She uses these games and her virtual crush to hide from reality—primarily the grief from losing her mother, the conflicting emotions of her father remarrying, and the confusion about a riff with her best friend. That is, until she becomes lab partners with the star soccer player and school heartthrob, Sebastian. What starts as mutual silence turns into an unlikely friendship. This coming-of-age story boasts a refreshing revelation at the end, dissecting complicated themes through quirky humor and the occasional fun list. Analee is a fully developed protagonist who learns how to face the challenges in her life. Sebastian encourages her growth but remains stuck in his own cycle, unable to overcome his personal hang-ups. Analee's family members do not change over the course of the novel, but she learns from their personalities and actions. It is through these stagnant secondary characters that she is able to come out of her shell and begin to understand her own emotions. VERDICT An entertaining novel for all teen collections.—Haley Amendt, Hinton Municipal Library, Alta.

Analee is good at hiding. Her mom died two years ago, and now she makes every effort to remain invisible—from the kids at school who call her Anally, from her dad's ridiculous girlfriend, and from the reminders of losing Lily, her former best friend. Analee is a writer, a list maker, an introvert who loves online gaming and has a major crush on her gaming friend, Harris. To make things worse, life at school just got insane as Analee agrees to fake date Seb Matias, the most popular guy in school. The plan is to make his ex-girlfriend jealous and reunite Analee with Lily, but there is no way for her to remain invisible through all this. Things snowball out of control as her dad's wedding approaches and the dreaded wedding speech looms. Ultimately, Analee must decide who to trust and when to take a chance on people. Despite being classified as a romance, this book is fundamentally about friendship, girl power, and standing on your own two feet while being happy in your skin. Analee does not contemplate what boy she wants, but focuses on what she wants from life, from friendships, and from family. She redefines herself in this new world without her mom and with a new stepsister. And, yes, there is a healthy dose of romance in there as well. This is a wonderful read for fans of To All the Boys I Loved Before (Simon & Schuster, 2014/VOYA April 2014).—Kristy Rademacher. 3Q 4P J S Copyright 2018 Voya Reviews.
